Shop for a Cause in March in Carmel

Carmel Arts & Design District.

CARMEL, Indiana. For a limited time, patrons of the Carmel Arts & Design District can shop for a cause to support breast cancer research.

Beginning March 1, 2010, select businesses in the Arts & Design District are banding together to support the Indianapolis Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Foundation by donating a percentage of sales during the month of March and offering special giveaways and drawings for customers.

Leading the charge is Rachel Davidson, owner of PillowTalk, 23 E. Main Street, a lingerie boutique in the heart of the Arts & Design District. PillowTalk is celebrating Bras for the Cause throughout March to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research as well as the annual Race for the Cure event on April 17. Davidson is donating 10% of total March profits to the Susan G. Komen Foundation Indianapolis Affiliate.

"Shoppers can feel good knowing their spending power is going toward a great cause," says Davidson. "Breast cancer has affected many lives, and we want to help contribute to finding a cure while celebrating and honoring those individuals who have been touched by this illness."

To thank those individuals choosing to shop at PillowTalk and contribute their dollars to the cure, giveaways and promotions are offered each day including one free eye exam from Lauck & McLean Optometry, 30 1st Street SW, a major sponsor for Bras for the Cause. Other giveaways are gift cards to Joe's Butcher Shop and Fish Market, 111 W. Main Street, Suite 110, Eberjey fine fabric wash, special edition "Pink Sugar" Skinny Dip candles adorned with the signature pink ribbon for breast cancer awareness, and much more.  Shoppers can also enter to win a $100 gift set from Ambre Blends, locally crafted, organic bath products, as well as one-of-a-kind pendants from local jewelry artist, Megan Kromer.

PillowTalk shoppers can feel good about other purchases made at select businesses in the Arts & Design District during March as well. When a PillowTalk receipt is presented, or Bras for the Cause is mentioned at time of purchase, both Mary & Martha’s Exceedingly Chic Boutique, 111 W. Main Street, Suite 120, and Holy Cow Cupcakes, 545 S. Range Line Road, will donate 10% of profits, while Circle City Tuxedo, 651 N. Range Line Road, will donate $5 for every purchase.

The Simply Sweet Shoppe, 30 N. Range Line Road, is offering 15% off entire purchase and Artisan Masterpiece, 19 E. Main Street, is offering 20% off regularly priced items or 10% off sale items when shown a receipt from PillowTalk at the time of purchase. A PillowTalk receipt will also get patrons of CK Designs, 5 W. Main Street, 10% off a product or a hair service, and 10% off the bill at Serendipity, 2 W. Main Street.

Donation receptacles are available at select Arts & Design District businesses for those visitors wishing to make a contribution to the Susan G. Komen Indianapolis Affiliate directly.

'Carousel' at the Civic Theatre, Mar. 12-28

'Carousel' at the Indianapolis Civic Theatre, Mar. 12-28.

The Indianapolis Civic Theatre production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel will be presented Mar. 12-28 on the Marian University campus, 3200 Cold Spring Road, Indianapolis.

Named "Best Musical of the 20th Century" by Time Magazine, the 1994 Broadway revival garnered five Tony Awards and five Drama Desk Awards. Both Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, creators of such hits as Oklahoma!, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music, have said the show was their favorite collaboration. It was also innovative for its time, being one of the first musicals to contain a tragic plot. The story is based on the Ferenc Molnar's 1009 Liliom, transplanting the Budapest setting of the Molnar play to a New England fishing village. Though character names and settings were changed, the most radical difference was the hint of hope added at the end for the musical with the now historical anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Truly one of the great classics, the show centers on the tumultuous love affair of brash carnival barker Billy Bigelow and young millworker Julie Jordan. Their struggle with life and raw emotions is set to one of the most ravishing and celebrated scores of the time. This production is directed by Robert J. Sorbera and choreographed by Michael Worcel, featuring original dances by Agnes De Mille. The music is directed by Brent E. Marty.

Show times are Mar. 12-28: Thu at 7 PM, Fri/Sat at 8 PM, and Sun at 2 PM. For reservations or more information, visit the Civic Theatre Web site at http://www.civictheatre.org/carousel.html, or call the Box Office at 317-923-4597. Civic Theatre event listings on AroundIndy.com...

The Library of Congress' With Malice Toward None: The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition is traveling to just five US cities and includes the Bible upon which Lincoln and, most recently, President Obama took the oath of office; the contents of Lincoln's pockets the night he was assassinated; plus documents and correspondence from his political career. This exhibition will be on view in Indianapolis through April 11, 2010.

The museum's own With Charity for All: The Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection will be open at the same time, and continue through July 25, 2010. It features items the museum and the Allen County Public Library received when the state was gifted the full $20 million Lincoln Financial Foundation Collection, reported to be the world's largest private collection of Lincoln personal and presidential memorabilia. Among the more than 30,000 items in the collection are signed copies of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment; three-dimensional artifacts including Lincoln's wallet and a chair he sat in for some of his most famous photographs; artwork; thousands of documents; images from the family photo album; prints and rare books.

During the month of February 2010, the museum will feature both the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment; after February, the two documents will rotate, to protect them from harmful light and atmospheric conditions.
